چکیده
Neuroscientists have become increasingly aware of the complexities and subtleties of sensory processing. This applies particularly to the complex elaborations of nerve signals that occur in the sensory circuits, sometimes at the very initial stages of sensory pathways. Sensory processing is now known to be very different from a simple neural copy of the physical signal present in the external world, and this accounts for the intricacy of neural organization that puzzled great investigators of neuroanatomy such as Santiago Ramó n Y Cajal a century ago. It will surprise present-day sensory neuroscientists, applying their many modern methods, that the conceptual basis of the contemporary approach to sensory function had been recognized four centuries ago by Galileo Galilei. Introduction In 1609, Galileo initiated telescopic observations that were of crucial importance in heralding the modern scientific revolution. The new conception of the universe, as advocated by Copernicus, placed the sun in the central place rather than the earth. To derive support for this new conception, Galileo introduced a similar revolutionary shift in the conception of sensory processing and of vision in particular.

The yin and yang of calcium effects on synaptic vesicle endocytosis.
A large number of studies suggest that calcium triggers and accelerates vesicle endocytosis at many synapses and non-neuronal secretory cells. However, many studies show that prolonging the duration of the stimulation train, which induces more calcium influx, slows down endocytosis; and several studies suggest that instead of triggering endocytosis, calcium actually inhibits endocytosis. Here w...
متن کاملDistinct modes of endocytotic presynaptic membrane and protein uptake at the calyx of Held terminal of rats and mice
Neurotransmitter is released at synapses by fusion of synaptic vesicles with the plasma membrane. To sustain synaptic transmission, compensatory retrieval of membranes and vesicular proteins is essential. We combined capacitance measurements and pH-imaging via pH-sensitive vesicular protein marker (anti-synaptotagmin2-cypHer5E), and compared the retrieval kinetics of membranes and vesicular pro...
متن کاملEndophilin drives the fast mode of vesicle retrieval in a ribbon synapse.
Compensatory endocytosis of exocytosed membrane and recycling of synaptic vesicle components is essential for sustained synaptic transmission at nerve terminals. At the ribbon-type synapse of retinal bipolar cells, manipulations expected to inhibit the interactions of the clathrin adaptor protein complex (AP2) affect only the slow phase of endocytosis (τ = 10-15 s), leading to the conclusion th...
متن کاملClathrin-Dependent and Clathrin-Independent Retrieval of Synaptic Vesicles in Retinal Bipolar Cells
Synaptic vesicles can be retrieved rapidly or slowly, but the molecular basis of these kinetic differences has not been defined. We now show that substantially different sets of molecules mediate fast and slow endocytosis in the synaptic terminal of retinal bipolar cells. Capacitance measurements of membrane retrieval were made in terminals in which peptides and protein domains were introduced ...
متن کاملLive Imaging of Synaptic Vesicle Release and Retrieval in Dopaminergic Neurons
Dopaminergic (DA) neurons represent <0.01% of neurons in the human brain, but are essential for normal neurological and psychiatric function. The majority of these neurons reside in the ventral midbrain, but they exert their profound influences on brain function through projections to both the cortex and the basal ganglia. These projections secrete dopamine from small clear synaptic vesicles (S...
